On Friday, May 27, 2022, Valley Community Services held its ninth annual McCarthy Open at Cedarbrook Golf Course.
The McCarthy Open is a golf tournament held yearly to serve as the main fundraiser for the McCarthy Fund. The tournament and the fund were both founded in remembrance of former employee, Michael McCarthy.
Michael McCarthy, commonly known as Mickey, embodied the ideals and principles of VCS throughout his 23 years of employment. Mickey was famous for pulling cash out of his pocket and giving it to those who had nothing. He did this countless times, and he was especially generous to someone new receiving services at Valley. Mickey was there to provide financial support and raise people up until they were back on their feet. Tragically, Mickey passed away in July of 2011 after a brief illness, but his memory lives on in the name of the fund designed to reflect his ideals.
The McCarthy Fund provides funding for people who, due to personal hardships or emergencies, are unable to receive funding for things like clothes or other personal items. The generous donations to the McCarthy Fund have allowed our individuals to take vacations, go to sporting events, and celebrate monumental life events that would not typically be supported by our budgets. The McCarthy Open continues to be a successful fundraiser for this fund.
VCS typically invites friends of the company as well as companies that we regularly work with. Donors had the opportunity to submit a four-person golf team to play in the 18-hole tournament. There were several ongoing golf awards to win, like longest drive, closest to the pin, and so forth. C. Harper Auto Group sponsored a hole-in-one contest to win a car!
There were many other festivities throughout the day like basket auction, 50/50, and much more! The day ended with awards, prizes, and closing remarks from the McCarthy Committee.
And once the scores were tallied…the first place winners of the McCarthy Open were… Emkompas BI!
